lyrics

Cosmic was a runaway who hang around the club one day We snuck him sandwiches and snacks to eat while the owners were away He had curls and a long yellow beard And we couldn’t tell where he was from He seemed angelic when he didn’t seem scared Had that shattered grace of someone who was on the run He was looking for a gig playing jazz in a piano bar We said he needed cleaning up He said he’d never shaved before

So I bought a plastic razor and some shaving cream, took him to the kitchen where the lights were bright He flinched each time the razor swept his skin My hand shook because I didn’t know how to do it right Then he sat down at the piano and began to play We lost ourselves inside the chords he struck He called his music cosmic but he wouldn’t tell us his name So that’s what we called him, and the nickname stuck

Cosmic didn’t have a place to stay, and the nights were getting colder I told him I would help him look as we walked around the Latin Quarter Took him to the bookshop with the beds, but they weren’t taking anybody in Called the hotline for the homeless shelters, but there was nothing they could do for him So we pushed through the throngs of tourists, found a quiet spot on the steps of the abbey I told him there was nothing more that I could do, and I walked away, feeling lousy Got home with my spirits low, crawled into our twin bed Pulled the covers over me and promised this was the last time I’d get in over my head

But Cosmic was a domino
The gentle nudge that starts to overthrow
Every little thing you think you know
Every little thing you think you know
And Cosmic was the mystery
Beautiful and brutal the uncertainty
Was he trapped inside his odyssey
Or the master of his destiny?
